ReadMe for the Express Modem
••••••••••••••••••••••••• Express Modem Notes •••••••••••••••••••••••••
- If your dealer reinstalls the modem, make sure you reset the clock on your
computer to the current date and time in the Date and Time control panel
before loading the modem software.
- The Express Modem was designed to work with the Communications ToolBox
(CTB). The Express Modem Tool, a CTB Connection Tool, was designed to work
specifically with the Express Modem. If you use an application which supports
the CTB, it is preferable that you choose the Express Modem Tool, rather than
selecting the Serial Tool, Apple Modem Tool, or disabling the CTB.
- The Express Modem provides a means of compatibility for those applications
which do not support the CTB. Selecting "Internal Modem" in the PowerBook
control panel will enable applications using serial port A (External Modem Port)
to communicate with the Express Modem.
- It is not necessary to explicitly turn on the modem through the Express Modem
control panel. When an application attempts to use the Express Modem, the
modem will automatically be turned on.
- The On / Off buttons in the Express Modem control panel control indicate
whether the modem application is running. However, the modem hardware is only
powered when an application is actually using the modem (i.e. Express Fax set to
receive faxes, AppleTalk Remote Access set to receive calls, or an active
AppleLink connection). When there are no applications using the modem, the
modem hardware will be powered off even if the modem application is still
running. When the Express Modem is set to off, the modem hardware power is
guaranteed to be off.
- When your computer is transmitting or receiving data or faxes, make sure that
it does not go to sleep. You can select "Don't sleep when plugged in" from the
Options dialog box in the PowerBook control panel.
- If you have AppleTalk Remote Access installed, it is recommended that you
remove the “Serial Port Arbitrator” extension from the Extensions folder
inside the System Folder. AppleTalk Remote Access will still function properly.
The extension just keeps track of the names of applications using serial ports
for user notification.
- Applications that use a non-standard means of accessing a modem (for
example, bypassing the serial driver and directly controlling the hardware, or
implementing an alternate to the standard serial driver) will have no means of
accessing and using the Express Modem.
Express Modem User's Guide Errata:
- The default for ATB is ATB1 (p. 113).
- In ATX (p. 121):
dial tone detection is enabled by X2 or X4
busy tone detection is enabled by X3 or X4.
- When the Express Modem is installed and External Modem is selected in the
PowerBook control panel, both the Internal Modem and the Printer/Modem
buttons are displayed in the AppleTalk Remote Access control panel (p. 35).

- Using the credit card feature in Fax Sender: Many phone systems send a tone
to indicate that the calling card number and PIN may be entered. To tell the
Express Modem to wait for the calling card tone, enter a colon (:) in the credit
card field where appropriate (i.e. before the credit card number). If you find
that the tone is not being properly detected, you may need to enter one or more
commas (,) to tell the modem to wait before sending the calling card number.
Each comma represents a delay of 2 seconds.
- Note that the colon (:) dialing modifier is not supported on the PowerBook 100,
140, 145, or 170 computer. To use the credit card feature on these PowerBooks, you
should enter commas (,) to delay sending of the number as explained above.
- Fax Terminal is not set by default to receive faxes. You must first select the
“Answer calls” checkbox in Fax Terminal Preferences in order to receive faxes
automatically.
